Nevzat Süer

Who is Nevaz Süer

He was Turkey's first professional chess player and the first international chess master.[1] He was a well-known professional musician in Turkey in the 1960s, but is better known for his contributions to the development of modern chess in the country. Süer was the Turkish Chess Champion in 1968, 1969 and 1973, and represented Turkey in the National Team many times. In 1975, he was awarded the title of International Master. He served Turkish chess as Federation President, President of the Istanbul Chess Association, national player, writer, archivist and trainer.

In 1943, as a high school student, he was introduced to chess by chance at Kadiköy Public House. In 1946, he placed 5th in the Istanbul chess tournament. In the following years, he won championships in the same tournament (1947, 1948, 1963, 1972 and 1979 tournaments).

He contributed to the field of music as one of the few important names who brought the mambo fashion to Turkey. In the 1960s, he performed both as a soloist and with the orchestra he named after himself in the popular clubs of the period. In the same period, he traveled abroad as a pianist on an Italian cruise ship and performed a highly acclaimed repertoire on board. He gave up active music in his old age, but continued to play chess.

He won the title of Turkey's first IM "International Master" in chess together with İlhan Onat at the zonal tournament in Italy in 1975. He participated in a total of eight chess Olympiads (1962 Varna, 1964 Tel Aviv, 1966 Havana, 1968 Lugano, 1972 Skopje, 1974 Nice, 1980 Malta, 1982 Lucerne). He represented Turkey. He also represented Turkey in the 1971 Tehran RCD cup and Balkan chess competitions.

Beginning in 1973, he wrote about chess in his column in Cumhuriyet newspaper for 17 years, filling a very important gap at a time when it was difficult to find a book or any other Turkish source on chess in Turkey.[4] He pioneered practices such as organizing correspondence tournaments by letter and publishing their results and parties in the newspaper. He laid the foundations of today's age group tournaments by pioneering the organization of inter-school chess competitions with the cooperation of Cumhuriyet newspaper and the Ministry of National Education. Due to his close dialogues with young people and his correspondence with chess fans outside Istanbul, he was described as a "chief teacher" in Turkish chess.
