| 2 | Opening Theory

What makes chess beautiful is what remains undiscovered in its lesser-used openings. Obviously, some theory remains more popular than others and for good reason. Regardless, becoming acquainted with the ugly ducklings of chess, like the Scandinavian, will benefit your game in a variety of ways. As your career expands, opponents will find you more difficult to prepare for.

You will love this fantastic video series by the world's most recent expert on the Center Counter. Watch and learn as GM Perelshteyn explores the main and side lines of the Scandinavian defense!

The Scandinavian 3... Qd6 Part 1  Eugene kicks things off with the newest family member of the Scandanavian, 3...Qd6. There is a lot to learn here so pay close attention. This line may be unorthodox, but it is very effective. (Intermediate and Advanced)

The Scandinavian 3... Qd6 Part 2 Now you are comfortable with the idea of equalizing vs 7.Nc4. In this video, Eugene will go through two stronger alternatives for white in f4 or Bf4. (Intermediate and Advanced)

The Scandinavian 3... Qa5 Part 1: Main Line 4.d4 .e4 players truly find this main line of the Scandinavian annoying. After White develops with a tempo, Black refutes retreat and moves Qa5. In this first video of the main line Scandinavian, Eugene gives great examples on how to lace the board with booby-traps. White, on the other hand, is forced into a boring game of center play. (Intermediate and Advanced)

The Scandinavian 3... Qa5 Part 2: Critical SIde Line!  In this variation of the main line Scandinavian, White opts to castle long and keep the bishop pair. GM Perelshteyn is convincing when exploring the strengths of Black's position. As he explains here, Black's pawn structure is solid and White has a hard time taking advantage of the open position. (Intermediate and Advanced)

The Scandinavian 3... Qa5 Part 3: Alternatives To d4!  By now you probably love what you see, and are willing to add the Scandinavian to your repertoire. To conclude your education of the Center Counter Defense, Eugene summarizes previous lessons, observes a few more side lines for White and reveals the only sound preparation for rock, paper, scissors! (Intermediate and Advanced)
