Setting up a chess game is easy. It’s playing that can be hard.

Here is how to set up a game.

Step 1: Decide where to play.

Do you want to play on a real board with a friend near you? Or do you want to play with one of millions of people online? You can’t go wrong with either choice!

To play on a real board you’ll need a chess set. To play online, just sign up at Chess.com (it’s free).

Step 2: Set up the board.

Before you can start the game, you’ll need to set up the board. If you are new to the game, make sure you review how to set up the board. If you are playing online, it will be set up for you.

Step 3: Challenge your opponent.

If you are playing at home, then you can issue a friendly challenge face-to-face. If you want to play online, then you can either choose to play a random opponent, or challenge a friend to play. May the best player win!

Step 4: Make your first move.

Once the game starts, it’s time to make your first move. If you don’t know how to move, check out our article on the rules of chess. If you already know how to play but aren’t sure of the best opening moves to make, try this article on the best openings for beginners.

Step 5: Be a good opponent.

Always remember that to use the golden rule when you are playing against someone else. Don’t do anything you wouldn’t want them to do. This includes stalling, abandoning the game early, or saying unkind things. Be a thoughtful opponent and you will help make the game (and the world) a better place.
